How much salt do babies and children need

Babies and children do not need a small amount of salt in their diet. The recommended maximum amount of salt for babies and children is: Breastfed babies receive the right amount of salt through breast milk.

The maximum salt for babies  is:

  • up to 12 months – less than 1g of salt a day (less than 0.4g sodium)
  • 1 to 3 years – 2g of salt a day (0.8g sodium)

The formula also contains a similar amount of salt to breast milk.
When starting to introduce solid foods, do not add salt to foods because their kidneys cannot afford it.

It is important to check nutritional information before purchasing baby foods.
The salt content is usually given by sodium labelling.
For example, foods containing more than 0.6g of sodium per 100g are considered to be high in salt.
You can refine the amount of salt in foods by multiplying the amount of sodium by 2.5.
For example, 1g of sodium per 100g is the same as 2.5g of salt per 100g.
You can reduce the amount of salt by avoiding chips and other products.
Try to try healthy things like dried fruits, raw vegetable sticks and shredded fruits to keep things varied.
